Green Team at Montlake

Our Purpose

Green Team is, in essence, the student council on sustainability for our school. As a team, students focus on various activities that help to increase our schools awareness of healthy food, food gardening and recycling/composting

The Green Team is a committee of students in the 4/5th grade who meet every Thursday at lunch. We work in the garden, do composting in the lunchroom, serve “Free Salad Thursday and work together to do other projects.We had our largest team last year–30 students–and kept pretty busy!

We even started a BLOG to share with our Montlake friends and families. We are grateful to Ms. Bloom and Mr. Van Deusen for all their time in helping our team try out new ideas and offer their time during our lunch meetings.

History

2018-19 School YearGreen Team is off to a great start: Montlake’s Green Team was selected as a Rave Green Certified School. This is awarded by the Seattle Sounders FC because we sustained Platinum status during the 2017/18 school year. In recognition of these efforts, Sounders FC awarded our school with 60 tickets to the Sounders/Dynamo match, and a chance for green team members to meet players on the field post match! Twenty-five students were able to go on field to meet our Sounders, and over 50 people were able to attend the game. Thank you to our Green Team members for making Montlake a better and greener place.

2016-2017 School Year Accomplishments

• Free Salad Thursday all year
• “Row For The Hungry” garden Box
• Pilot snack program for 4/5th grade
• Visit from Alice Waters whose Edible Schoolyard Program has been the model that we have used to design our school garden program
• Additional garden hours on our school campus
• Started a blog
