Dear Montlake Families,
Welcome to the 2014-15 School Year! I’m excited to be your new principal. I feel humbled and honored to have been chosen to join this wonderful school. Thank you to all of you who have welcomed me with such warm wishes. It is much appreciated. I’m looking forward to seeing your children’s bright, shining faces in our classrooms and hallways. Please be patient with me as I learn a couple hundred names!
I was an assistant principal at Daniel Bagley and Whittier last year and before that I taught a 2/3 blend for many years and was the “Teacher in Charge” at an International Baccalaureate school in Portland Public Schools. I also taught both second and fourth grades at a Spanish bilingual school in Oakland, CA years ago. I have a lot of different experiences in education, and I am passionate about making sure every child has the best educational opportunities we can provide. Helping children succeed is what motivates me, and I am thrilled to have found myself at a school with amazing families and a dedicated and innovative staff. It’s going to be a great year!
On a personal note, I have three children and three step-children all within the ages of nine and thirteen. It can be a busy household. I love the outdoors, and we spend a lot of time hiking and camping. My other hobbies are reading, running, and baking cookies.
I am pleased to announce Kirsten Phillips as our new kindergarten teacher, David Tookey as a half-time math teacher to support our math program, and Jessica Moran as our new instructional assistant. Please be sure to welcome them when you get a chance.
We will have a “mini” open house on September 2 from 11:00-12:00, and you are welcome to come let your child visit his or her new classroom. Class lists will be posted at that time.
On September 3, there will be short opening ceremony on the playground at 9:00, followed by a parent coffee in the cafeteria for anyone who would like to stay and chat. School starts at 8:40.
If your student is not going to be in school on the first day, please call our attendance secretary at 252-3304. It is VERY important that we know the difference between "absent" and "not coming" as we have wait lists for several grade levels.
Student classroom assignment lists will be posted at the school during our Open House on Tuesday, September 2nd. Please do not call the Office before then asking about student assignments.
The building will be closed for Labor Day weekend from Friday, August 29th through Monday, September 1st.
Mark your calendars for Picture Day: Thursday, September 25th. Yuen Lui will be doing school portratis again this year. Both individual and class pictures will be taken this day.
Before/After school PTA-sponsored enrichment clubs will not begin until closer to October. More information about what clubs will be offered will be in the "3rd day packet" going home with students on Friday, September 5th. If you need before/after school childcare, pelase contact CDSA at 323-8299.
