    Dear Montlake families,
What a wonderful first few days we’ve had here at Montlake! Our new arrival, dismissal, and lunch procedures appear to be going quite well, and everyone seems happy to be back. I’m still working on getting to know many new names and faces, and am feeling grateful to have the opportunity to work with such an amazing staff as we serve such wonderful students and their families. I can tell already that this an extremely thoughtful and caring community, and we appreciate all you do at home to ensure that your student arrives at school ready to learn and grow.

Our focus as a staff will be on the following building goals this year:
    1. Starting with the heart in our interactions with each other;
    2. Increasing our focus on becoming an ever more welcoming and interdependent community; and Continuing to implement the newly adopted Collaborative Classroom Curriculum for literacy (more info here: https://www.collaborativeclassroom.org/ )

You’ll be hearing more from me about the work we are doing to meet the different aspects of these goals as the year progresses. In the meantime I hope you’ll introduce yourself and I’ll look forward to meeting you in person!
    Julie

Tutors Needed! We are looking for 3 tutors for the 2018-2019 school year. As a tutor you can work up to 19 hours a week. A Word from the Art Studio
When you know who you are; when your mission is clear and you burn with the
inner fire of unbreakable will; no cold can touch your heart; no deluge can
    dampen your purpose.
    - Chief Seattle, Duwamish
Welcome all new and returning students and families to a fantastic year in the
    Montlake Art Studio!
Clouds are rolling in and the wind is picking up as I write! I am hoping for
another hour of sun so that we can continue our oil pastel school garden
studies! The forest of sunflowers and mighty pumpkins have inspired some
beautiful work and I look forward to sharing them with you in the coming days.
A few things to highlight this week:
Drawing Books will used again this year in the Art Studio! Black hard cover
bound 11.5 x 8.5 plain white paged books can be purchased at a variety of local
art stores, including Artist and Craftsman, UW Bookstore and Blick. If you are unable to purchase a book, please contact me and I will see that your child receives one. Many returning upper grade students left their books here  over the summer and can continue working in them. For new books, please have your student write their name
on the inside cover. All sketchbooks will be shelved in the Art Studio-please feel free to drop in and see what your child is working on!
Wayne White, the Boren Sisters and the Duwamish people-Contrary to rumors, I did not make the 14 foot puppets hanging in the stairwell over the summer! They were generously gifted to Montlake by the fantastically imaginative artist Wayne White, multiple Emmy winner (and honorary MESAS member) for his work on Pee Wee’s Playhouse, music videos including Peter Gabriel and Smashing Pumpkins and the subject of the documentary Beauty is Embarrassing. Here Come the Boren Sisters were displayed at the Seattle Art Fair this summer and featured in the Seattle Times (you can read the article at the base of the northern staircase!) and now reside in our historical building. Like all good art, they have inspired much conversation, personal reflection and research. We will be looking at the role of the Boren family and the very first people of Seattle, the Duwamish, and how both groups impacted on one another and our city.

    MESAS-
The Montlake Experimental Secret Art Society will be having a general meeting on Wednesday at 4/5 lunch. Students may bring their lunches up to the Art Studio and listen to a panel of elders discuss past projects, responsibilities, and answer questions including the rigorous application process. Students will be reminded over the intercom on Wednesday morning. Not to be missed!

I am looking forward to a dynamic year of art making with your child! More to come at curriculum night on September 27. Thank you and good day!

A Note from the Mr. Van Deusen
Hello Montlake Wolves!! I’m Mike Van Deusen, PE (health and fitness) teacher here at Montlake. I just wanted to highlight some important events and give an overview of what’s happening in the gym throughout the year. Throughout the school year students will work on mastery of gross and fine motor skills, the five components of fitness, nutrition, concepts and fitness activities such as racquet sports, bowling, archery (3rd -5 th grade), bikes (2nd - 5 th grade), dance, bat and ball skills and more. We rely on the Montlake Way and RULER strategies to increase our social and emotional problem solving and skill sets. Some important dates/events/extra-curricular clubs are as follows:
RUNNING CLUB: Our run club is fun before school (7:40-7:50am Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) activity where students run laps around the playscape and earn bracelet tokens for every mile run. 12 laps around the playscape = 1 mile. No need to sign up. We are starting Monday, September 17th, 2018
DANCE CLUB: I’ve talked to several members from last year’s group and there is interest in performing again. This is more of a student led club where students meet after school once a week in the play court to practice a choreographed dance and then perform at the community center and then the all school dance in April. More info to come later.
ARCHERY CLUB (just 4th and 5th graders). I’m contemplating starting an archery club in hopes of competing as a school for the WA state archery competition in mid-March in Ellensburg, WA. This would be a before school activity probably starting in Feb. 2019. More info to come later.
ALL SCHOOL DANCE mid-April at Montlake Community Center
FIELD DAY: sometime during the last week of school in late June at Montlake park playfields. NEED MANY VOLUNTEERS. Again, more info on that later. That’s it for now, if you have any questions or want to chat you can find me in the gym or email me at mbvandeusen@seattleschools.org.
