Volunteering at Montlake - Oct 31 Deadline

The deadline for volunteering is creeping up. If you have filled out the volunteer application but have not received confirmation of volunteering, please check your forms to make sure you have submitted your ID. Your application will not be processed without an ID. You can attach a copy to your volunteer form (send Tiffany an email when you do so), you can send a copy to Tiffany at tlwalker2@seattleschools.org, or you can show your ID to Tiffany in the office. The volunteer application is required for any type of volunteering, and if you’d like to chaperone, please fill out that separate addendum. I’ve attached a link that will work whether or not the SPS website is down. Please use this link to sign up to volunteer. Please be reminded that if you have not filled out paperwork by October 31, 2018, you will not be allowed to volunteer during the year. Tiffany processes volunteer applications every Thursday, so you can expect a reponse the Friday after you complete the application. You can click here to get more information about volunteering with Seattle Public Schools, as well as access other resources like the Adult Sexual Misconduct training. Please contact Tiffany at tlwalker2@seattleschools.org if you have any questions, and thank you to the 100+ parents who have already gone through the process!!

    Halloween @ Montlake

Weather permitting, our students will meet on the playground at 12:50pm on October 31st. Kindergarteners and first graders will parade in their costumes, and we’ll all dance to Thriller! Please check with your classroom teacher or room parents for specific details on class parties.
No masks or weapons at school. We would also prefer no face pain unless it’s minimal and your child can put it on themselves. Thank you!

    News from Mr. V

Hello Montlake families! Over the past three weeks our fitness students worked on the skill of striking using a variety of racket and paddle activities such as hitting forehand, backhand, and serving shots. Students enjoyed learning different muscle groups and demonstrating their skills individually and in small groups. We practiced outside on our 60’ long net! Students rocked it! Many students are interested in practicing at home. I found some decent and fairly inexpensive badminton rackets on Amazon along with a set of birdies. For $20 you can get a couple rackets and birdies and have a great outdoor fall activity for the family!
Many students have inquired about Dance Club. Dance Club is a for fun group of Montlake students who meet after school on Fridays for about 40 minutes and teach each other dances. There will be a performance/party in December at the Montlake community center. The group also performs at the all school dance in April, also at the community center. Last year, the group consisted of mainly 2nd-5th graders, but many 1st graders are really interested and I’m letting them join. Anyone is welcome, although the ability to learn a choreographed routine created and taught by fellow peers is helpful. If you think your child is interested, you can find me in the gym for a form or I can put them in the office. You can also email me at mbvandeusen@seattleschools.org and I’ll send you a form. We started last week so students can join in this Friday October 26th. *If your child is in Launch, they can participate but you need to inform them your child is participating and need to fill out some form.
I also want to inform everyone of many community partners in the fitness arena. One is the Seattle Cascades Ultimate team. They are holding a frisbee clinic at Loyal Heights October 28th. See the Community information section for the info and how to register.

    LGBTQ Families Dinner

The annual lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBT) Families Dinner will be held Thursday, November 8th from 6-8pm at Meany Middle School. Members of the school board will be there to welcome LGBTQ families and their friends. All SPS students, families and staff are welcome to attend! This this donation-funded event is brought to you by the Health Education Office. Dinner and entertainment will be provided. To reserve space at this popular event, please RSVP with the number of people in your party to Brennon Ham at brham@seattleschools.org or 206-743-3564.

Montlake at the Sounders on Oct. 28 - Decision Day!

On Sunday afternoon, some 150 (!) Montlakers will be at Century Link Field to cheer on Sounders FC in their last home game that has major play-off implications! This has got to be the largest sports outing in the school's history, and the PTA is delighted with the amazing turnout!
If you paid for your tickets already, I'll be sending them to you via email this week. Please print the PDF files or bring them with you on a mobile device. Important: read the following stadium policy before leaving home on Sunday: https://www.soundersfc.com/stadium/bag-policy
If you have not reserved your tickets, you're welcome to contact me to learn where our group will be sitting. You then might be able to get tickets nearby on your own - via SeatGeek.com!
The kick-off at CLink is at 1:30, but we will plan to meet between noon and 12:30 in Pioneer Square for the March to the Match!! Everyone is encouraged to wear their best Sounders and Montlake gear, but please dress for the weather :)

Here's to Community Building, and - Go Sounders!!!

    Parent Education Night

“Montlake families, be sure to save the date for our upcoming Family Information Night on the topic of "Kids & Anxiety: How To Help", with Linda Spain, LMHC. This PTA-sponsored event will take place on Thursday, November 8 from 6-7pm. Stay tuned for more details shortly!”

    BuzzBook is Up and Running!

To help us all stay better connected this school year, the Montlake PTA provides two email services for parents and staff. They are up and running and here are the instructions for using each.

    CLASSROOM EMAIL DISTRIBUTION LISTS
Sometimes you need to reach the other parents in your child’s classroom. Planning a party, finding a lost article, scheduling parent/teacher conferences. To send mail to all the parents in a classroom, send an email to Room<TeachersLastName>@MontlakePTA.org. For example, for Ms. Johnson, that would be roomjohnson@montlakepta.org for Emily, that is Roomgussin@MontlakePTA.org, etc.
The teacher and any aides are included on these distribution lists. If you want to send email to the class, but don’t want the teachers to see it (surprise planning!), send mail to Room<TeachersLastName>Secret@MontlakePTA.org. For example, to reach Ms. Stump’s room, without Ms. Stump, send email to RoomStumpSecret@MontlakePTA.org.

    BUZZBOOK FAMILY DIRECTORY
The BuzzBook provides parents with easy access to the student directory, complete with parent contact information. It is accessible from any computer or mobile device that can send and receive email. It is always up to date as information changes and students join the school.
To use the service, send email to BuzzBook@MontlakePTA.org with a subject line containing at least the first three letters of a name to search for - student, parent, teacher; either first or last name. For example, to look up Sophia’s information, send “soph” to BuzzBook@MontlakePTA.org. Click that last link to see how easy it is. Within a few seconds, the system will reply with an email containing your information.
You can also access the classroom rosters and other information through the BuzzBook. For example, send “room gussin” to BuzzBook@MontlakePTA.org to retrieve the list of students in Emily’s room. Need the names of the teachers? Send “staff”. Need to know who is on the PTA board? Send “pta”. See the bottom of each response for even more options.
What about privacy? Your first day of school packets included Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) Release and Montlake Media Release forms. Among other things, these form allow for the use of your contact information for All-School and Classroom Family Directories. That is the BuzzBook. We take the privacy of our families very seriously. Through the email interface, only email addresses that actually appear in the BuzzBook have access to the information in the BuzzBook.

Please note that all bulletin announcements will run for one week only. If you would like to run your notice for more than one week, please submit a new notice each week by Monday at 10:00 a.m. to tlwalker2@seattleschools.org
