My name is Ms. Barry, and I am the school counselor here at Montlake. I am so excited to be part of this fabulous school community and I am excited to work with your children this year!

My job as Montlake’s school counselor is to help students succeed by helping remove social and emotional barriers to learning.  I will be teaching lessons in the classrooms, running small groups, and helping students navigate a variety of topics, including friendship, social skills, impulse control, stress/anxiety, study skills, conflict resolution, and grief/loss, as well as working with teachers and students on RULER lessons and concepts.  My goal is to be sure that all Montlake students benefit from the counseling program and have a chance to participate in some way.

In addition to classroom lessons and groups, I am also available to meet with students one-on-one for non-academic issues and concerns that might be interfering with their learning. I am happy to have students self-refer to me when they feel it would benefit them, and I also welcome parent and teacher referrals.  When working with students individually, I use a solution-focused, targeted counseling approach that helps students explore solutions to their problems over a series of brief sessions.  My hope is that all Montlake students will know that my office is a place they can find a listening ear, a voice of encouragement, and a place to problem-solve and talk through some of life’s challenges- and hopefully have some fun sometimes, too!

If we haven’t met, please feel free to stop in and introduce yourself- my office is across the hall from the main office, and I am in the building on Mondays, Fridays and alternate Wednesdays.

    Happy new school year!
