    Dear Montlake Families and Friends,


    Thank you all for coming out to help work and celebrate art, music, books and the garden with us on Friday at 5th Annual Eat Real/Art Walk.
    Even the weather turned out for us!
    I also want to say thank you for all your well wishes.

    My position as Garden Educator at Montlake has been a labor of love for me, but after seventeen years it’s time for me to move on and explore new adventures. I will keep you posted.

    We are so pleased that the garden program will continue to flourish under the guidance of Deirdre McShane. Deirdre is a graduate of the University of Washington-IslandWood Masters in Education program and she has worked at the Edible Schoolyard. I’m excited for the students and the community to learn from her.
    Lastly, thank you for your support of Garden Education. I believe that all subjects can be taught in the garden and my hope is that some day garden education will be present in all schools.

    Placement Input Form
    As the school year draws to a close, staff at Montlake are busy planning for next year. Students (and parents) are often excited and apprehensive to know who the next teacher will be. As I’m sure you are aware, creating balanced classes is something we take very seriously. A lot of time and effort goes into balancing gender, ability levels, learning styles, behavior, etc. We know that as parents, you know your child best of all. As a result, we would like to offer you the chance to give some input. This is optional. Please do NOT mention specific teacher
     names. We cannot make guarantees about teacher placement, and grade level teams will be reading your responses.

    Teachers will be working on placement in June, but enrollment can often change over the summer, so as in past years, you will be notified of your child’s (or children’s) new teachers the day before the first day of school. See the attached form in the body of the Weekly Bulletin email. Forms are due back on Monday, June 11th. Thank you!

    MONTLAKE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ANNUAL TALENT SHOW!:
    All students are invited to perform for their peers at this years Talent Show on June 12th! If your student is interested in showing off his/her talent, they can grab a permission slip from their homeroom teacher, Ms. Pollema (the music teacher), or in the main office to bring to the "audition" where the students will give us a preview of their acts! We encourage everyone to join who is interested!

    Pick Up Student Medications
    Please pick up your student’s medication on the last day of school. Do not leave them at the school—they will be destroyed. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Minor at mrminor@seattleschools.org

    Notes from the Library
    On Thursday, June 14, Blythe Summers will be visiting us from the Montlake branch of Seattle Public Libraries to tell students about the Summer of Reading program that S.P.L run each year. If your child is not yet a member of the public library system, you can complete this form and I can deliver it to Blythe so that she can bring membership cards to school when she visits. Being a member of the public library is a fantastic way to keep your children reading when our schools are closed for the summer. I have fond memories of my own childhood Saturday mornings spent in our local village library - help create those memories for your children!

    Instrumental Music Concert

    Greetings Montlake Community!
    The instrumental students are excited to announce they will be performing their Spring Concert on Tuesday, June 12.

    Please note there will be an assembly for our 3rd-5th grade classes Tuesday morning, June 12 at 9:30 AM. Please feel invited to attend with your 3rd-5th class to support students who’ve learned an instrument this year! We will be performing in the gym.

    Please also feel free to communicate with families and put the invite in any digital newsletters. We’d love to have any parents or community members join in either the assembly or the evening performance at 6:30PM. Thank you for your support!

    Friday June 15th

    5-8pm
    Montlake Community Center
    This event is for EVERYONE! Bring your family, friends and neighbors. The more the merrier! We’ll have huge inflatable slides, bouncy houses, games, prizes, and more! Snack on popcorn, snow-cones, and cotton candy. Enjoy burgers and salad for dinner. We’ll have a fun photo booth mirror donated by a lovely Montlake family and face painting by the famous WILD SMILES face painters; their 17th year!
    Wristbands/ Meal Tickets! The deadline to purchase tickets in advance is NOON on Friday June 15th. Tickets can be purchased at the door, but we encourage everyone to purchase in advance. The Parks Department takes 10% of all tickets sales purchased at the carnival, but 100% of pre-sales go to Montlake. Click on the following link to purchase wristbands/tickets: http://montlakepta.org/carnival. Pre-purchased tickets can be picked up at “will-call” at the carnival.
    All are welcome! We want to see everyone there! We’ve set aside tickets for anyone who might need a bit of extra help. Please see Tiffany in the office for any number of tickets you need.

    Volunteer! The carnival is a PTA sponsored event and we rely solely on parent and alumni volunteers. Please join us in making this a wonderful event for our kiddos by volunteering for a shift or two. Middle and high school student alumni are more than welcome to volunteer (AND alumni volunteers will receive a free meal ticket!)     5th Grade Promotion Details!

    Time is quickly winding down, and it is now time to start thinking of the end of the year and Fifth Grade Promotion. Our promotion will be on June 20th from 6:00-7:30pm on the Montlake grounds. Please note that we will have two opportunities--one for students to speak during graduation, and one for parents to write something about their student.

    For Students:
    You are invited to submit a commencement speech for the upcoming 2018 Montlake Promotion Ceremony. Several 5th grade girls and boys will be chosen to speak at the promotion. See below for more detail instructions, and keep in mind that written speeches are due Monday, June 11th. Invites will also go out to students this week.

    For Parents:

    We are preparing the program for this year's promotion ceremony, and would like to give families the opportunity to share a memory, quote, or well-wishes for their child to be included in the program. Please send Tiffany the name of your child, and no more than 3-5 sentences by Monday, June 11th. Examples included below:
    Andrew: we are so proud of the young man you are becoming. Your kindness, sense of right and wrong, and willingness to stand up for what you believe in is an inspiration to the whole family. You are a wonderful role model for your siblings, and we are so grateful to have you in our lives. Love, Mom & Dad
    Joy: We are so proud of you! Congratulations on six years at Montlake. You're going to rock middle school. -Mom & Amy

    Advanced Learning Window Open
    The referral window for SPS students in kindergarten through 8th grade begins May 15th for the 2019-2020 school year. The referral window for non-SPS students begins August 1st. All referrals for testing are due by September 24, 2018 at 5:00pm to determine eligibility for the school year 2019-2020. Please read the characteristics of gifted learners to see if you should refer your student. Read more about how to submit an Advanced Learning referral.

    Don’t Forget To Register for Kindergarten!

    Do you or someone you know have an incoming kindergartener? Don’t forget to register your kindergartener now! Early registration helps the district predict staffing for the new year, and ensures you will get all applicable kindergarten information coming from the school in the spring.
